Project Supervision Procedures

 

MIS 650 projects are supervised by professors in the School of Business Administration.  Although the actual project work is carried out by students, each project is provided supervision for the following reasons:

o To help students needing advice about how to proceed with their projects
o To keep students on schedule to prevent incompletes
o To increase the quality of the results
o To give students opportunity for feedback about the progress of their projects.

To facilitate the supervision, the following guidelines and procedures are offered.

General Procedure

1. Student has an idea for a project, discusses this in one of the initial classes and with the instructor.  A list of potential supervisors is created.
2. Student develops a formal proposal for a project
3. The instructor critiques and evaluates the project proposal, further refining the list of potential supervisors.
4. The student (and/or the instructor) approaches potential supervisors with the goal of making a match.
5. Supervisor and student agree on project contract
6. Student obtains necessary permissions (if required) before embarking on project
7. Student carries out the project and meets periodically with the supervisor.
8. Supervisor provides advice and guidance, references to literature, resources as appropriate and available.
9. Student finishes project, writes project report for supervisor and instructor.
10. Student completes the project inventory to make sure all necessary tasks and forms are complete.
11. Student completes the self-evaluation form to be included in the project presentation package.
12. Student does project presentation.
13. Supervisor evaluates project on evaluation form.
14. Instructor grades student performance.

Responsibilities of Supervisor vis-a-vis Student

1. To meet, according to a mutually-agreeable schedule, with the student a minimum of three times during the semester of the student's registration
2. To provide advice to the student carrying out the project
3. To point student to appropriate literature

Responsibilities of Student vis-a-vis supervisor

1. To keep all appointments with supervisor
2. To provide supervisor with a copy of the final project report
3. To advise the supervisor if the nature of the project is to be changed

What the Supervisor will not Do for the Student

1. Reading of literature
2. Pre-reading of all of the final project report
3. Data gathering, analysis or interpretation
4. Production of any deliverable.
5. Be responsible for the quality of any deliverable
