MIS 650  Project Seminar

Project Presentation Format and Content

The presentation should adhere to the following guidelines:

A. Materials available at time of presentation

    1. A powerpoint presentation available to the instructor and the supervisor
    2. A one-page executive summary available to all attendees
    3. A completed self-evaluation form (see below)
    4. A completed inventory form (see below)

B. Schedule and Timing

The presentation should last between 30 minutes and one hour, exclusive of questions and comments.  The presentation will be scheduled at a date, time and venue mutually agreeable to the attendees but in no case later than the day that grades are due for the semester in which the student is registered in MIS 650

C. Audience and Venue

The minimum audience will be the student, the supervisor and the instructor.  Others may be invited if it seems reasonable and agreeable to the student and the instructor.  The default venue will be the instructor's office, although it is acceptable to have the presentation in a classroom or an off-site location.  Scheduling of the venue at any location other than that of the instructor is the student's responsibility.

D. Process

The presentation should be available either as a PowerPoint file or on a website accessible from the selected venue.  If the venue selected is not the office of the instructor, the student has the responsibility of making sure that appropriate display equipment is available and working.

The student can dictate how the presentation will proceed.  It is recommended that an uninterrupted presentation be done first, followed by questions from the audience and answers from the student.  However, the instructor reserves the right to ask clarifying questions during the presentation.

Immediately after the presentation, the instructor and supervisor will confer concerning the presentation for the purpose of assigning a grade.

E. Content

Content depends on the type of project.  For a case study, literature review or survey, the content will follow a standard research paper presentation structure (introduction, literature survey, research question, methodology, data/results, analysis, conclusions, comments on process).  For campaigns (software development, management interventions, simulation) the content should follow a technical report structure (introduction, problem statement, problem analysis, design, implementation, demonstration, evaluation, lessons learned).  For more detail click here to visit the report format webpage.

F. Self-Evaluation

The self-evaluation is a tool for improvement.  Each student should complete at least one self-evaluation and the final self-evaluation should accompany the deliverables for the project.  The self-evaluation will play no role in grading of the project but may help the supervisor and the instructor understand more about what went into the project.  Click here for the self-evaluation form.

G. Inventory

The inventory is a checklist of requirements for the project, detailing aspects of the project to remind the student of what is needed and should accompany the deliverables for the project.  The inventory plays no role in grading of the project but can be used to alert the student to missing aspects. Click here for the project inventory.

H. Evaluation

The presentation is evaluated both by the supervisor and the instructor.  You can examine the form by clicking here.
