HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

Human resource managers are concerned with the effective use of human resources in organizations. This field encompasses a broader view of the traditional “personnel” function to include not only the recruitment, selection, development and evaluation of individuals, but the planning, design and management of various organizational functions. Courses include studies of “organizational behavior,” and “organizational theory.” Broadly trained students are needed who can combine applications of psychology, sociology and political science with statistical and computer methods. Private and public organizations have found that increasing emphasis on new technology has required new attention to the way work is organized and people are managed. Thus, human resource managers are often found in such diverse functions as career development, organizational change, information system design, industrial relations, personnel evaluation, and program assessment. Most students planning a career in HRM expect to complete a Master’s degree to hold full professional credentials, due to the diversity of the field.
